You probably know if you have been reading HEAL a long time that I often talk about the fact that there is always a reason behind everything. The symptoms you are experiencing are not normal, and you shouldn’t ignore them.
- Feel bloated or swollen after eating? You’re not feeling well.
- Heartburn? Low stomach acid could be the cause of your heartburn.
- You’re not losing weight despite eating a lot or exercising. There’s more going on.
Many of the clients who come to me have been eating too little, working out a lot and yet they are not losing weight. We have them eat different foods (and sometimes more), and add in supplements. All of a suddenly, the weight starts to fall off.

While we’ve talked about portion management, and gut-health as two of the most obvious reasons why you can’t lose weight, your liver is something that hasn’t been discussed much.
The liver is the primary organ of detoxification in the human body. Sugar, alcohol, starchy foods and chemicals in personal care products can all take a toll over time on your liver.
These are signs that you may need to get your liver checked:
- Weight loss is difficult
- Constipation
- Pellet poops
- Low energy
- Foggy brain
- Achy Muscles
- Alcohol or sugar intolerance
- Dark circles or bags beneath the eyes
- Bad Breath
- Hormonal imbalance
Here are some foods that will help you love your liver:
- Apples
- Beets
- Bitter foods (dandelion greens, arugula, endive)
- Lemons
- Garlic / Onions
- Cauliflower/Broccoli/Brussels Sprouts/Cabbage
Your liver needs a lot of these everyday nutrients:
- B Complex (meat, fish, sweet potato, spinach)
- Vitamin C (leafy vegetables, colourful fruits and veggies)
- Magnesium (nuts, seeds and leafy vegetables)
- Glutathione is a precursor to glutathione. It can be found in garlic, onions and other cruciferous plants.
Here are some other supplements that you might want to try. They are available online at this or in your local health food shop:
- DIM
- Calcium D Glucarate
- Liver-GI Detox
- Alpha Lipoic Acid
- NAC
- Milk Thistle
