It’s easy to believe that if you want your clothes to fit better, you should just eat less or exercise more. Although exercise is important, and eating too much will not help, the foods you choose to eat are just as important.
Cabbage
You may not like cabbage, but if you cook it right, you’ll love it. I’ve certainly done so. I love it either chopped up and roasted or in this Detox Salad Recipe with avocado dressing.
One cup of red cabbage cooked provides 70% of the daily Vitamin C requirement. Vitamin C is essential for the liver’s detoxification processes. Another great thing about cabbage is its fiber content. One cup of cabbage contains 4g of fiber, which is around 10% of the daily recommended amount.
Lemon
Do you drink lemon water? This is a good way to start the day by supporting your liver. Before eating your breakfast, squeeze half a lemon into a glass of water at room temperature. Lemons can be used in a simple salad dressing made with olive oil, lemon juice and salt and pepper.
Lemons are rich in enzymes, which your liver needs to detoxify. Lemons are also an excellent source of Vitamin C.
Brussels Sprouts
It’s funny that the vegetables you may have hated as a child (cabbage & Brussels sprouts) can be so good for you. Roast your Brussel sprouts with some salt & pepper, oil and a little bit of oil. I think they taste better roasted than boiled.
Brussel sprouts are a member of the cruciferous vegetable family, just like cabbage. Cruciferous vegetables contain DIM which is known to reduce breast cancer cell proliferation and migration. Why is it important for detoxification? DIM helps to metabolize excess oestrogen in the body, and excessive oestrogen is what causes excess weight.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can be a wonderful natural remedy for heartburn. Watch your heartburn go away by taking a sip. Also, it can stimulate a slow digestive system. I use ACV in many of my salad dressings.
Apple cider vinegar is a great way to detox and lose weight. It can also help with blood sugar levels. In one study, the acetic acids in vinegar reduced belly fat and waist circumference.
Beets
I am a big fan of beets and there are many recipes in my section. Beets are rich in a phytonutrient known as betalain. This is anti-inflammatory, and helps to produce glutathione.
Chia Seeds
Fiber-rich foods tend to be good for detoxification, as they help your body remove the toxins it has cleansed from your liver. You might have experienced a “chia poop” if you’ve eaten a chia puddin’. This is a full, healthy poop. Fiber is essential for maintaining healthy blood sugar, reducing cholesterol and balancing hormones.
Two tablespoons of chia seed contains 8 grams of fiber. These homemade bars contain chia seeds.
Arugula
The bitterer something is, the healthier it is for you liver. Arugula definitely is a bitter-green. Bitterness can indicate the presence of enzymes, which aid in liver detoxification. They can also promote proper digestion.
