Many people ask me about my opinions on different forms of cleansing and detoxing. My posts this spring have all been about detox and weight loss. Recent posts can be found here:

What not to do:
Undereating
Research shows that eating too little can have negative effects. It can firstly slow down your metabolic rate because your body believes it must survive on less. Second, it can increase your Cortisol which is a stress-related hormone. Cortisol is directly linked to weight gain, so it’s not good!
Restriction does not work long-term in my experience or with my clients. If you don’t have superhuman willpower, and maybe only 1% of people do, then you may actually end up worse-off after restricting yourself. You might binge eat or return to old habits.
What helps:
Herbs
Many different teas and herbs can support the liver’s natural cleansing process.
Here is a list of some of the best:
- Milk Thistle
- Dandelion root
- Parsley
- Cilantro
- Green Tea
Only supplementing with these herbs can be a problem. You are not treating the cause if you don’t remove the foods that can be hard on your liver.
What will really work long-term:
It is best to incorporate cleansing and detoxing into your daily routine.
What does this mean?
- Ideally, aim to consume 6-8 portions of vegetables per day.
- Daily, consume at least 2 portions of leafy greens (broccoli and cauliflower) as well as 1 portion of cruciferous veggies (cabbage, broccoli, etc.).
- Lemon is a great natural detox food!
- Even the natural sugars such as maple syrup and honey can be removed.

The Next Level of
It’s something I do every day, and that is to add the Original Health Vegan Greens+O into my water or smoothie. This greens powder contains organic spirulina as well as broccoli sprouts and carrot root. It also has apple peel, alfalfagrass, beetroot, chia seed, sunflower lecithin, and more. The powder also contains milk thistle extract, a liver-loving herb.
You’ll notice an increase in your energy levels as well! One scoop of greens powder provides:
- Broccoli has 24x more alkalizing power than broccoli
- Apple fibres are 11 times more fibrous than normal apples
- Green tea has 62 times the antioxidant power of black tea!
- Alfalfa sprouts contain 6x more vitamin K than other foods
- Goji Berries contain 5 times the Vitamin C of oranges
Greens+ O is what you need if you’re gluten-free. Other greens plus powders from Genuine Health are not gluten-free.
What will happen if you stick with this:
You’ll see: You’ll feel:
- clearer minded
- Want to be craving-free?
- happier
- More confident
- Flatter tummy
- More energetic
But it takes some effort and won’t happen over night. You have to make healthy eating a way of life if you want to see results.
